The Setup

When we woke up on New Year's Eve without plans for that evening, Lev was in a frenzy to find something to do. Jamie couldn't understand it since she thought they were going to stay home and have friends over, but told Lev to make whatever plans he wanted. Even though she had told him time and again (and again and again) that she wanted to be engaged by the end of 2005, she had lost all hope when Christmas had come and gone and her present was a necklace from Tiffany's "Bean" collection. (Bean is Jamie's nickname for Lev). Eventually, Lev decided that they would all go to see "Sweet Charity" with Christina Applegate since they wanted to see it and it was closing night.

So the play was amazing! But getting home turned into a problem. They had to catch the 10:20 Metro-North train to be home in time for midnight, but New Years Eve in NYC's Times Square was chaotic and they couldn't get on the subway to the east side. So they had to walk, and fast! But the police had all the side streets blocked off. Thinking quick, Lev blurted out that Jamie was pregnant and couldn't possibly walk along the detour the cop had suggested. This worked about 7 times as they made their way across town, with a little help from Jamie and Oleg, of course. Some fake tears were even nearly shed when they wanted us to turn around and go down and up all these subway steps to cross the street. After we told our story, we were given a police escort across the street. Luckily, they made the train and made it home in time to throw some appetizers in the oven because they were hosting friends. Then, at 11:58:00, Jamie poured the champage toast and at 11:59:45, Lev got down on one knee and asked Jamie to marry him!! With two seconds to go, she of course said yes.
